In Summer 2004, Swindon Town Football Club's plans to build a new stadium at Shaw were left in tatters when the council voted to block development at the site. The club and the council were left in limbo, blaming each other for the failure of a scheme the club insisted was vital to their future. Fans were bitter at a council they felt did not care about the club they loved, and the situation seemed bleak. TrustSTFC sought to break the logjam that seemed to have developed and we set about collecting signatures on a petition calling on the council to help the club find a site where they could build a secure future.
From this, we began talking to fans, local councillors, the club and community groups concerned with the future of the town and we became convinced that the club can forge a viable future at the County Ground if only everyone would sit down and talk to each other. After many weeks of hard work, we think we have found a way out of the impasse, and helped broker a solution in which everyone wins.
On November 18th, Swindon Borough Council will vote on a motion to talk to the club about exploring the possibilities of redeveloping the County Ground. This vote could be crucial in securing the future of the club, and keeping the club not just in Swindon but in our historic home, at the County Ground, where we belong. In addition, we believe that a redeveloped County Ground could be a real asset to the whole community of Swindon - for fans, local businesses and the ordinary (and long-suffering!) taxpayer. This is a "once-in-a-generation" opportunity that is too good to miss - we can all win here, vote County Ground!
