Introduction

It has long been the case that Swindon Town FC have wanted to secure their own future by means of a new stadium development. At least in theory, such a move would benefit the club by improving facilities for spectators, raising capacity, and allowing the club to make money from the stadium on more than just match days.

At a council meeting on 22nd July 2004, the club's plans for a new stadium and sports village on the former landfill site at Shaw were effectively killed off by a vote in favour of backing the existing intention to eventually turn the whole site into a community forest.

At a meeting in June 2004, Trust members voted to back the club's intention of building a new stadium. The minutes of that meeting can be read by clicking on this link

In July 2004, TrustSTFC launched a petition to the council, urging them to work with the club to identify a suitable location for a new stadium, or to assist the club in redeveloping the County Ground if a site for a new stadium cannot be found within the Borough. The petition can be downloaded from this site by clicking on this link

In October 2004, A cross party group of councillors tabled a motion to Swindon Borough Council calling on the council and the New Swindon Company to work with the club to examine the viability of including a revamped County Ground within the proposed Town centre redevelopment.

In Late 2005 the clubs own proposals for a redevelopment of the County Ground site including a large scale housing development on the land currently used by the Cricket and Athletics facilities, and the loss of the open space on the site was rejected by the borough Council

In early 2006 members of TrustSTFC along with other concerned fans began working on our own proposals for a development of the County Ground site, making intelligent use of what is already there, and concentrating on the existing footprint of the Football Stadium with only minimal expansion so as to preserve all the existing open space, while delivering the enhanced stadium the club requires and improving the site as a whole for everyone

In December 2006, TrustSTFC published alternative County Ground proposals which were generally well received by the press, fans, and the general public.

Details of the plans can be read by clicking on this link
